Reference

“On Tuesday evening, the 8th inst., a lecture illustrated by lantern views was given by the Rev. David Dewar, of Northampton, under auspices of the CETS. For some months past an ecellent Band of Hope work has been conducted by the Vicar and Mrs Plant. The room on this occasion was filled by the juveniles, their parents, and friends. The lecturer showed in a clear and unmistakeable manner that if it were not for intemperance our police-courts, gaols, and asylums would be largely depleted. An interesting story, entitled 'Buy your own Cherries' was next illustrated on the sheet and read by the Rev. W. Plant, after which some comic slides followed, causing much merriment. Then came the event of the evening - the distribution of prizes to the most meritorious of the Band of Hope members, each recipient being warmly greeted by the audience and by some encouraging remarks by the Rev. David Dewar. A hymn and the Benediction closed a very enjoyable gathering, and several persons signed the pledge of Total Abstinence.”
