“On Dec. 31st a miscellaneous entertainmemnt was given in the Town Hall, Newcastle, under the auspices of the City Branch of the CETS the idea of the entertainment being to form a counter-attraction to the public houses, and a pleasantly varied programme was given. No charge was made for admission, and there was a large audience, which comprising as t did people young and old, must have been gratifying to the promoters. (...) The programme was opened by a selection of Scotch airs, finely rendered by the band of the Royal Artillery. This was followed by a series of dissolving views, representing the stories of 'Jessica's First Prayer' and 'John Tregenoweth', the connective readings being given by Canon Lloyd. The magic lantern entertainment was agreeably interspered with vocal and instrumental music by the Cathedral Choir, who sang Carols in a most pleasing manner, and by the band, who rendered various selections. A Solo was also given by Mr. William Lyall, who sang 'Nazareth' in capital style. At vthe close, the Bishop addressed a few remarks to the audience, explaning that the object of the entertainment had been to attract them from the many temptations taht presented themselves on a New Year's Eve. He trusted they would learn from the the story they had seen depicted the power of prayer, and hoped they would begin the New Year with prayer. He concluded by wishing them all a Happy New Year.”
