“What does Good Friday mean? - The beautiful weather this year brought more visitors than ever to this pretty village of Whalley, which was crowded in the afternoon and evening. For some years efforts have been made to bring before the trippers the real meaning of Good Friday, and the clergy had the valued assistance, as on two previous occasions, of Capt. Maountford of the Church Army. Besides the usual Church Services, there was a Service in the churchyard at 3.30, when at least 500 people must have been present; and at night a Lantern Service in the Church Lane was very well attended. This year three cornets were used to accompany the hymns, and proved a great help. So once more the Church bore her witness to her Crucified Lord, and, we are sure, led the thoughts of hundreds to the Cross who otherwise might never have remembered it at all.”
