It was Christmas Eve in the smoky North, where the clang of the hammers ring

And there, in a moorside cottage, a dying woman lay

Her child, the fairest, prettiest mite, just on the age of seven

Slide 5

And the little one knelt by the bed of straw, on which her mother lay

Slide 6

Where to go, she knew not; the thought in her baby brain

Her tiny feet were red with blood as she fell, and scarce could rise

With poor lips, all cracked with cold, she faltered a childish prayer

Her face lights up with a sudden joy at the sound of Christmas bells

She struggled to her feet, and on she pressed, nor paused to stay

From the church upon the moor, there came the sound of praise

But there is one has seen her fall, and kneels down by her side

The light from out the church's door, falls on her drawn, white face

As he sinks on the sod, and cries 'O, God! 'tis Nelly, my child'

Over the moor he strides, through the sweeping sleet and snow
