Catalogue of lantern slides: season 1901-2 (Dundee: Peter Feathers, 1901), 47

“15 Slides from Life Models. With Reading.

Henry Rivers has been a schoolmaster, but a succession of misfortunes has reduced him to an almost penniless condition, and his sight is failing. He had been advised to go to a skilful physician, but had not enough money. He had lent a firm, Holdfast & Spendall, one hundred pounds, but had lost the receipt, and could not call it in. He reads the raised Bible for the blind in the streets, with his little girl Hetty to lead him to and fro. One day the young daughter of Mr Holdfast overhears him from her window; she sends a servant to fetch him to explain to her the truths he has been reading. The young girl is dying of consumption, but little Hetty Rivers reads the Bible to her and brings her to a better understanding of salvation. The Bible, Hetty finds, is her mother's, sold when the rest of the home was put up to auction. After Miss Holdfast's death, Hetty takes the Bible home, and in it, to their surprise and delight, they find the lost receipt. The money is paid, the oculist performs an operation, and Henry Rivers, restored to sight, becomes an earnest Christian.”
