“Sambo is housepainting, yet not so engrossed with his work that he cannot find time to admire Chloe as she passes by, dressed in elegant fashion. As he resumes his work after the 'black but comely' lady had gone by, he still casts 'sidelong looks of love' at her retreating form. The mistress of the house, neither young nor beautiful, looks out of a window to see what progress Sambo is making, and receives the wet paint brush, which the heedless darkey is raising, full in her face. Tableau.”
