“24 Slides from Life Models. With Reading.

Ephraim is a cobbler, and his wife and only daughter, Lizzie, a child ten years of age, live in poor circumstances in a narrow court. The week before Whitsuntide he sees his little girl looking into a drapery shop, and finds she has set her heart upon a 'little bonnet.' He promises she shall have it, but has no idea then where the money is to come from. He refers to his promise to the child when talking to his wife, and finds she stands in need of many other things -- frock and boots at least -- which will come to about eighteen shillings. He goes to the draper and asks him to let him have the things and he will make them some boots and that he will 'turn teetotal' for six weeks in order to pay. The draper agrees, but the cobbler finds it a hard struggle; but he perseveres, and finds much pleasure in seeing his child tidily dressed on Whit Monday. Poor child! she is stricken with scarlet fever shortly after, chiefly owing to the unsanitary surroundings. She dies, full of faith; the cobbler and his wife determine to continue teetotallers, change their wretched abode for a healthier spot, where Ephraim flourishes in a small way, and becomes a teacher in the Mission Sunday School.”
