However, at last he comes up to the hole / Made ready to take in another long pole

And then the contents of the can he did pour -- / It might be a gallon or so -- perhaps more

And presently up comes another long pole / Prepared to be sent with force into the hole

And this is the plight which they found themselves in / They're deluged with mud from the crown to the chin
