“From A. Lang's 'Animal Story Book', by kind permission of Messrs. Longmans & Co. The story of a kindness repaid. Androcles, running away from his cruel master, seeks refuge in a cave. A lion approaches him, wounded, and the slave extracts a thorn from his foot and so makes friends. Androcles returns to civilization after three years, is captures, and condemnes to death. He is thrown to the lions, but when the punishment is to be carried out the lion proves to be his old friend, and his life is thus saved.”
