A medical practitioner and amateur botanist, editor of The Flora of the Liverpool District (1902, reprinted 1933 and 2012). President of the Liverpool Botanical Society in 1934.

His qualification 'F.L.S.' indicates 'Fellow of the Linnaean Society'; he was admitted as a Fellow at the Society's meeting of 7 November 1901.
