“Weigh House Sunday School - On Friday evening, December 17th, the question 'How shall we make our Sunday Schools more influential for food to our scholars?' was practically answered in a somewhat novel way, at the Weigh House Schools, Fish-street Hill. The scholars assembled for tea at 5.30. After tea, they went upstairs, and were entertained for some time with the magic lantern. About half past seven, they re-assembled in the schoolroom and entertained themselves and their parents with much spirit until about half past nine. The proceedings commenced by one of the scholars playing a piece of music on the piano. He was followed by the juvenile choir , who sang very nicely. Then came recitation, followed by the senior choir giving 'Ring out the bells'. This was followed by a duet on the flute by father and son, then recitaions &c. About half past eight a silver teapot, sugar-basin, tongs, and milk jug were brought upon the platform and by the superintendent, Mr. E. E. Ashby, on behalf of the teachers, presented to Mr. C. Smith, in recognition of his services amongst them. Mr. Smith having suitably replied, the remainder of the evening was occupied in giving recitations, singing &c. and thus passed a Christmas entertainment, given solely by the scholars and teachers of the school.”
