A. Leigh Barker, ‘Van Reports’ in Church Army gazette

“The Winchester III, Van (Capt. Bradbury and Cadet Williams) has visited Sway Parish, and a Three-weeks Mission has been conducted. The Missioners were well received from the start, and quickly won their way to the hearts of the people. Lantern Service were held in the Schools after Evensong each Sunday and in the Schools or Church on weekdays. Several addresses were given to children, and a most interesting lecture on the general work of the Church Army was also given. I have never before attended a Lantern Service in a Church, and have been much impressed by their value, and by the Missioners' method of conducting them. Capt. Bradbury has been most kind in preaching at several Sunday Services, and he and Cadet Williams have also taken some weekly Services at a Mission Room at the far end of the parish. I cannot speak too highly of the work done by the Missioners. The large congregations which they have drawn together sufficiently testify to the appreciation of the people. A village mission of this kind, when the Missioners have the power, as in this case, of appealing to the heart, may be of the greatest value in arousing and reviving spiritual life, and I cannot but trust that their labours, both in visiting and preaching, may bear deep and lasting fruit. A. Leigh Barker, Vicar.”
