“'No Ropes Needed': The Church Army Van has lately made a first visit to this village. As is usual with 'first things', it was looked upon with suspicion very much in the same way as the 'Black list' was regarded on January 1st of this year. However, this prejudice was soon dispelled as was testified by the numbers which attended the lantern lectures and the services in the church. Capt. Kilford and Bro. Pilton also visited Chilbolton Down, which is about two miles from Crawley. The services were held in Mr. Cholmondeley's beautiful dining room, which was large enough to hold a gathering. That the work of the C.A. Is highly appreciated here was shown in the practical way of subscriptions towards the new lantern. (...)”
