“'With Lantern and Umbrella.' Keddington, Suffolk. - A fortnight's mission in this parish under Capt. Everest has just been completed. There was some difficulty in obtaining the schoolroom, but the captain, undaunted, decided to hold the lantern services and other open-air meetings in the school playground. Here large numbers of people congregated evening after evening, and it was noticed that had the schoolroom been used, there would not have been helf-enough room in it. The Sunday evening meetings were largely attended, about 300 persons being present on the first Sunday and upwards of 400 on the second. The lantern Services illustrating 'The life of Joseph,' 'The Passion,' 'The Torn Bible' and the work of the Church Army were attended and appreciated by attentive congregations. On one evening the wind was rather rough, and at first caused the lantern to smoke a little. Capt. Everest, thereupon, mounted the lable with an outspread umbrella and sheltered the lantern beneath it. The slides were then satisfactorily shown. It is believed that several careless and indifferent persons have been attracted to religious services. The Workhouse in the village was visited by the Captain, who held a mission service in the immates' chapel. Much untiring visiting of aged, sich, and afflicted, was done by Capt. Everest and Brother Bailey and Wilson, and their self-denying labours and consistent lives will be long remembered here. J.J.S., for Capt. Everest.”
