“A SERMON IN A BRAKE Burton Joyce and Bulcote. - We had heard that our Bishop had lately dedicated a second C.A. Van for work in the Southwell Diocese, but we did not quite understand what the Van was for till it came rumbling along into Burton Joyce on Monday, August 15, and was got into position under some trees close by the school in the very middle of the village. Then we soon found out what the text on our Van meant 'Be ye sure of this that the kingsom of God is come nigh unto you ' - for Capt. hambrook and his two assistants, began holding simple Mission Service in the school at night. We heard some of the old prayers we know and love best, and sang bright hymns to easy tunes that went witha wondeful swing, and listened night by night to earnest words calling us to greater devotion and faithfulness in our daily life. The Monday night congregation was small but more came each night tilll on Sunday the school was packed with people who came on from Church to hear the Farewell Address. Besides the Mission Services, three beautiful sets of Lantern Slides were shown; two of these were given out-of-doors, and we think it will be long before the last series of pictures on 'The Passion of our Lord,' is forgotten in Burton Joyce. It was hardly dark, on a warm summer's night, and the school-yard was fairly full of people, who stood listening very quietly; just outside the wall many more gathered round, while behind them kept driving by, brake after brake of returning excursionists, who must all have seen at least one touching picture of the sufferings of the Lord. The beautiful representation of a carving of the Crucifixion, showing up white and solmn in the gathering darkness, was especially touching, and brought home the thought that 'the solitary Man on the Cross,' is indeed stronger than all who are against Him. One very happy evidence of good done was given by a larger number of Communicants than usual being present on Sunday and we do hope that many amongst us have been roused to renewed earnestness by the Mission. The Captain read the Lessons at the Sunday Evening Service and in every way tried to help on the work of the Church in our parish. When the Van left us there many who hoped to see it come amongst us for another visit. For Capt. Hambrook.”
