LAY, William J. (fl. 1880s) – lecturer
South Street Baptist Sunday School Band of Hope – organiser
“South Street Baptist Sunday School Band of Hope - In connection with the Third Quarterly Meeting of the above, a Fruit Banquet was held on Wednesday, in the Lecture Hall of the Chapel and was well attended. Mr. T. P. Eisler, one of the deacons presided and the addresses were given by Mr. G. S. Wybroo, and the superintendent of the Sunday School, and Mr. C. O. Barber, conductor of the Band of Hope. Two lads, John Sims and Henry Ambrose, engaged in a dialogue entitled 'Teetotal Sunday', in which it was advocated that the teetotalers should have a collection on one Sunday in the year in all the Churches, and that those who spent money in beer should have be asked to save it for one day, and put it on the plate, so that the Temperance Societies which prevented so much sickness should be supported as well as the hospitals, in which drunkards were frequently patients. After two recitations by Kate Allwright and Ann Reynolds, and the fruit had been handed round, Mr. Lay of the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union, gave a lecture, illustrated by panoramic views, entitled 'The Band of Hope Sketch Book' showing the sad effects of drink, and the happy results training the young in total abstinence principles. At the close, of the Lecture votes of thanks were passed to the chairman, speakers, and lecturer.”
